Steamboat Sound Check: Illiterate Light at Schmiggity’sPresented by McCreight Progressive Dentistry
In this episode of Steamboat Sound Check, we dive into the world of Illiterate Light, the electrifying rock duo making waves with their high-energy live performances and genre-blending sound. Ahead of their return to Schmiggity’s, Jeff Gorman joins us to talk about the journey that brought them here—from his early musical influences to their evolution as a band, the lessons learned from signing with Atlantic Records, and the creative process behind their latest album, Arches.
Hailing from Virginia, Illiterate Light is the brainchild of Jeff Gorman (vocals, guitar, synth) and drummer Jake Cochran. The duo is known for their dynamic approach to live music, seamlessly blending indie rock, psych, folk, and danceable grooves—all while sounding like a full band despite being just two people. Their breakout track Better Than I Used To gained national attention on FM radio, and their latest album, Arches, has drawn comparisons to the likes of Radiohead and Tame Impala, further cementing their place as one of the most exciting independent acts today.
Jeff Gorman’s musical roots run deep—his uncle is Steve Gorman, drummer for The Black Crowes—so rock & roll has always been in his DNA. But it was his passion for sustainability and unconventional touring, like the Petrol-Free Jubilee Carnival Tour (which involved a bicycle-powered stage), that helped shape the ethos of Illiterate Light. Jeff shares how those experiences, along with their time on a major label, have influenced the way they approach music now.
As they embark on a six-night Colorado run, we discuss what makes Schmiggity’s a special stop for the band and how it feels to return to the mountains of Steamboat Springs. Plus, looking ahead, we talk about their upcoming shows at Red Rocks and Dillon Amphitheater alongside Dispatch, John Butler, and Donavon Frankenreiter.

Steamboat Sound Check Podcast: A Conversation with Joe Funk of Kitchen Dwellers
For more than 15 years, the Kitchen Dwellers have been carving out their place in the bluegrass and jam scene, evolving from Montana State University students jamming in a kitchen to a nationally recognized touring act. Their blend of bluegrass, rock, and cosmic storytelling has taken them to festival stages around the world—including Colorado, which they consider a second home. As part of our WinterWonderGrass Musician Spotlight Series, we sat down with bassist Joe Funk for the Steamboat Sound Check Podcast, presented by McCreight Progressive Dentistry, to reflect on the band’s journey, their latest album, and what makes the Colorado music scene so special.
In our conversation, Joe shared insights into Seven Devils, the band’s most recent album, which unexpectedly took on a thematic connection to Dante’s Inferno. While the original intention wasn’t to create a concept album, the songs naturally gravitated toward themes of sin, self-reflection, and redemption. One track written by Funk, “Pendulum (V),” explores gluttony and addiction replacement theory—and he gives us insight on the inspiration behind the poignant lyrics dealing with this heavy subject.
Of course, no conversation with a Kitchen Dweller would be complete without discussing their love for Colorado and WinterWonderGrass, where they’ve become festival favorites. Joe reflected on the unique energy of Colorado’s music community, where fans embrace not just the music but the artists themselves, creating a welcoming, family-like atmosphere. With Baja WonderGrass on the horizon, we had to ask—mountains or beach? Tune in to hear Joe’s answer and more as we dive deep into the journey of the Kitchen Dwellers on the latest episode of Steamboat Sound Check.

In this special edition of Steamboat Sound Check, part of our WinterWonderGrass Series, we sit down with the incomparable Lindsay Lou—a vocalist, songwriter, and storyteller whose music blurs the lines between folk, soul, bluegrass, and blues. Known for her unmistakable voice—one that glides effortlessly between ethereal beauty and raw, unfiltered emotion—Lindsay has carved out a unique space in the Americana and progressive roots world.
Born and raised in Michigan, Lindsay’s musical journey was shaped by her deep connection to family, nature, and the rich traditions of roots music. Her sound, while rooted in bluegrass and folk, has evolved into something entirely her own—melding heartfelt lyricism with powerful, soul-stirring performances. Whether fronting Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys, collaborating with artists like Billy Strings, The Infamous Stringdusters, or The California Honeydrops, or stepping into the spotlight at WinterWonderGrass, she brings an undeniable presence to every stage she graces.
But this conversation isn’t just about music—it’s about transformation, community, and new beginnings. Lindsay recently announced that she and fellow musician Kyle Tuttle are expecting a baby boy in May, a milestone that is already shaping her perspective on songwriting, performance, and life itself. She opens up about how this shift is influencing her creativity and the unexpected ways motherhood is already intertwined with her music.
One of the first projects born from this new chapter is “Bart’s Diaper Club”, a beautifully intimate collection of lullabies recorded at home as part of a ‘community baby shower.’ Fans can contribute toward diapers, and in return, receive an album of these tender, stripped-down songs. We dive into the incredible outpouring of support she’s received, reflecting on how the folk and bluegrass community has always felt like an extended family.
And speaking of family, no conversation with Lindsay would be complete without discussing WinterWonderGrass—a festival that has become a home away from home for her. Over the years, she’s been an integral part of its spirit, performing across its many incarnations, from Colorado to Baja to River WonderGrass. She shares what this festival and its tight-knit artist community have meant to her, how those spontaneous, magical on-stage collaborations come together, and what it’s like to step into the unknown—sometimes quite literally, with a lyric sheet handed to her just before going on stage!
This year, she returns to WinterWonderGrass as a Special Guest, hopping between sets and lending her voice to various performances, including potential collaborations with The Brothers Comatose and The California Honeydrops—two bands she’s recently worked with on new songs. We even get some behind-the-scenes insight into whether we might hear the never-before-performed live track “Fall in Love Again” during the festival.
Finally, we explore the ever-growing phenomenon of WinterWonderWoman, a showcase that celebrates the incredible women in a traditionally male-dominated genre. Lindsay reflects on how the divine feminine influences her artistry, the power of creating space for women on stage, and how the WinterWonderGrass audience has embraced this movement year after year.
This is more than just an interview—it’s a deep dive into a moment of transformation for Lindsay Lou, a celebration of music as community, and a glimpse into the heart of one of WinterWonderGrass’s most cherished artists. Whether you’ve followed her journey for years or are just discovering her music, this conversation will leave you feeling inspired, connected, and ready for the magic of WinterWonderGrass.
🎧 Tune in and get ready to experience the soulful brilliance of Lindsay Lou.
